Valencia is a city that uniquely combines history, modernity, and nature. In this post, I’d like to talk to you about the Canon EOS R8 and share my impressions after some time experimenting and putting it to the test in all kinds of scenarios.
Below, I’m sharing the video I made of Valencia with the EOS R8—I hope you like it!
Canon EOS R8, a camera for everything
Let’s talk about this beast. The EOS R8 is a compact mirrorless camera with incredible performance for both video and photography. Thanks to its size, it’s ideal for travel or sports recording. It features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor, allowing it to capture amazing details in both highlights and shadows. In the video, you’ll see the sharpness of night shots and sunrise shots with the sun facing the camera. Here’s a video I made of Valencia with the DJI Osmo Action 4, so you can compare.
The camera includes a full-frame CMOS sensor, which, combined with its DIGIC X processor, significantly improves low-light performance.
For video, it can record up to 4K at 60fps and has an ISO range up to 25,600 (expandable to 102,400).
Additionally, it features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing you to control it remotely. This is super useful if you’re using an app to manage the camera or need to transfer files instantly.

Color Grading with Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3)
One of the things I love most about the Canon EOS R8 is its ability to record in C-Log 3. This color profile gives you a wider dynamic range and greater control and creativity in color grading. This is especially useful in high-contrast locations, like Valencia’s old town.
To work with log profiles, you need to convert the recorded file to a standard profile like Rec. 709, using LUTs (Look-Up Tables) for conversion.
The Best and Worst of the Canon EOS R8
The Best
✅ Autofocus: One of the things that impressed me the most is its fast and precise autofocus system. As I mentioned, I’m more into video than photography, and creating depth with focus on distant objects is very important to me.
✅ Video recording: Its video capabilities and the option to use Canon Log 3 are outstanding. The dynamic range it offers and the ability to play with color grading is just amazing.
The Worst
❌ Battery life: The battery life is quite poor. In real-world use, it lasted me around 2 hours, which is far from enough in my opinion—especially if you’re using it for travel or long photography/video sessions.

Conclusions and Price of the Canon EOS R8
The Canon EOS R8 stands out for its lightweight design, image quality, and professional video capabilities in a compact body. Its autofocus system is one of the best in its price range, offering incredible accuracy for both photography and video. Additionally, the option to record in C-Log 3 makes it a great choice for content creators and filmmakers looking for maximum flexibility in color grading.
On the downside, the battery life is one of its weak points, something to consider if you plan on long recording or photography sessions. The best solution is to carry extra batteries to avoid interruptions.
Overall, if you’re looking for a versatile full-frame camera with excellent image quality and impressive video performance, the EOS R8 is a great option, especially for those who prioritize video recording and portability.
The price of the Canon EOS R8 varies depending on the market and available promotions, but it generally ranges around €1,800 – €2,000 for the body only, and €2,200 – €2,500 if purchased as a kit with the RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
